Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a central role in the immune system. It is produced by various cells, including lymphocytes, macrophages, and fibroblasts, in response to stimuli such as infections and tissue injuries.IL-6's functions are diverse, reflecting its role as both a pro-inflammatory cytokine and a mediator of anti-inflammatory responses. As a pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-6 is involved in inducing the acute phase response during inflammation, which is a rapid immune defense followed by infection or trauma. It stimulates the production of acute phase proteins by the liver, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen, which help in containing the infection and initiating repair processes.
In addition, IL-6 acts on B cells to promote their differentiation into antibody-producing plasma cells, contributing to the adaptive immune response. It also influences T cell function, particularly in the differentiation of naive T cells into various subsets, including Th17 cells, which are critical in defending against bacterial and fungal infections.However, IL-6 is also capable of exerting anti-inflammatory effects, such as inhibiting TNF-alpha and IL-1, and activating IL-10 production and regulatory T cells, which serve to dampen immune responses.
