Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced primarily by the placenta during pregnancy. The role of hCG in early pregnancy is critical-it supports the corpus luteum, which in turn produces the progesterone hormone needed to sustain the uterine lining and provide a supportive environment for the developing embryo and fetus.hCG can be detected in the blood and urine, and its presence is the basis for most pregnancy tests. Levels of hCG rise rapidly in the first trimester of pregnancy and can also be used as a marker in the management of certain conditions like trophoblastic diseases and in the follow-up of certain cancers.
Beyond its role in pregnancy, hCG also has functions in the reproductive system. In females, it can trigger ovulation and support the corpus luteum in the ovary. In males, it stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone, which is necessary for the development of male secondary sex characteristics and spermatogenesis.hCG's utility extends to applications; it is used in fertility to induce ovulation and to increase sperm count. hCG is produced from the urine of pregnant women or through recombinant DNA technology.
