FSTL4, or Follistatin-like 4, is a protein encoded by the FSTL4 gene in humans. It belongs to the SPARC (secreted protein, acidic, rich in cysteine) family, which is involved in various cellular processes, including cell communication, proliferation, and differentiation. FSTL4 shares structural similarities with other follistatin proteins, particularly in the follistatin-like domain, which is known to bind and neutralize members of the TGF-β superfamily of growth factors.
The biological functions of FSTL4 are not as well characterized as other family members, but it is thought to play a role in modulating extracellular signals and cellular responses to these signals. FSTL4 may act in a regulatory capacity, influencing tissue remodeling, repair, and fibrosis by affecting the activity of growth factors and cytokines within the extracellular matrix.FSTL4 expression has been detected in various tissues, suggesting a widespread role in human physiology. Its expression can be regulated by a range of internal and external factors, including developmental signals, stress responses, and possibly pathological conditions. Given its involvement in modulating growth factor activity, FSTL4 may have implications in wound healing, cardiovascular diseases, and fibrotic disorders.
