FAST Kinase Domain-containing protein 5, abbreviated as FASTKD5, is a protein encoded by the FASTKD5 gene in humans. It belongs to the FASTKD family, a group of proteins characterized by the presence of a Fas-activated serine/threonine (FAST) kinase domain. However, despite the name, these proteins are not true kinases and do not possess kinase activity.FASTKD5 is primarily located within the mitochondria, the organelle responsible for energy production in eukaryotic cells. It plays a critical role in regulating mitochondrial RNA (mtRNA) metabolism and mitochondrial energy production. Specifically, FASTKD5 is involved in the process of RNA stabilization and the assembly of mitochondrial ribosomes, which are essential for the synthesis of proteins within the mitochondria.
Mutations in the FASTKD5 gene can lead to deficiencies in mtRNA processing and mitochondrial protein synthesis, which may result in mitochondrial diseases. These are a group of disorders that occur when mitochondria fail to function appropriately, leading to a decrease in cellular energy production. The role of FASTKD5 in mitochondrial function, energy production, and RNA metabolism makes it a focus of research in numerous fields. Not only is it of interest in the study of mitochondrial diseases, but its importance in cellular energy production also makes it relevant in the study of other diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders and cancer.
