Zinc finger protein DPF3, also known as DOM-3Z or DPF3, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the DPF3 gene. It belongs to the d4 family of zinc finger proteins, which are characterized by a unique C2H2-like zinc finger domain, known as the DPF domain.DPF3 is involved in chromatin remodeling, a crucial process that regulates gene expression by altering the structure of chromatin – the complex of DNA and proteins in which the genetic material is packaged. Specifically, DPF3 is known to be a component of the BAF (BRG1/BRM-associated factor) complex, one of several ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complexes in mammals.
The BAF complex is involved in various cellular processes, including transcription, DNA repair, and cell cycle progression. As a component of this complex, DPF3 contributes to these functions. It interacts with acetylated and methylated histones, modifications that are associated with active transcription. Two isoforms of DPF3, DPF3a and DPF3b, have been identified. DPF3b is known to promote cardiac gene expression and is crucial for heart development, while the specific roles of DPF3a are less well understood.Alterations in DPF3 expression or function could disrupt normal chromatin remodeling and gene expression, potentially contributing to disease development.Further research into DPF3 and its roles in chromatin remodeling and disease will provide important insights into gene regulation and potential targets.
