CYP11B Activators

CYP11B, also known as Cytochrome P450 11B, is a family of enzymes crucially involved in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones, particularly in the adrenal glands. These enzymes play a central role in converting cholesterol, a fundamental precursor molecule, into various biologically active corticosteroids, such as aldosterone and cortisol. The adrenal cortex, the outer layer of the adrenal glands, is the primary site where CYP11B enzymes are expressed and function.

There are two main isoforms of CYP11B: CYP11B1 and CYP11B2, each with distinct functions and tissue distributions. CYP11B1, also known as 11β-hydroxylase, is primarily responsible for catalyzing the conversion of 11-deoxycortisol to cortisol, a vital stress hormone involved in regulating metabolism and immune response. On the other hand, CYP11B2, known as aldosterone synthase, is specialized in converting corticosterone into aldosterone, a hormone that regulates electrolyte balance and blood pressure.Dysregulation of CYP11B enzymes can lead to various hormonal disorders, including Cushing's syndrome (excess cortisol production) and primary aldosteronism (excess aldosterone production).
