Membrane Associated Ring-CH-Type Finger 7 (MARCH7), also known as RNF176, is a protein encoded by the MARCH7 gene in humans. It is part of the MARCH family of proteins, which are E3 ubiquitin-protein ligases. These proteins play a vital role in the ubiquitin-proteasome system, a critical pathway responsible for protein degradation in cells.MARCH7, like other MARCH proteins, contains a RING-CH type zinc finger domain. This domain enables the protein to bind to ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2 enzymes) and facilitate the transfer of ubiquitin to target proteins, marking them for degradation.
The exact functions of MARCH7 are still under investigation. However, preliminary studies suggest it may be involved in the regulation of various cellular processes, including the immune response and cell cycle progression. Importantly, MARCH7 has been found to be overexpressed in some cancer types, suggesting a potential role in tumorigenesis. In terms of structure, MARCH7 is a membrane-associated protein, meaning it is attached to the membrane of a cell or organelle. This location facilitates its function in protein ubiquitination, as many of its targets are membrane proteins.
