Prealbumin Antibody (E-4) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 antibody that detects Prealbumin in human samples through applications such as western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Prealbumin, also known as transthyretin, plays a crucial role in the transport of thyroid hormones, particularly thyroxine, from the bloodstream to the brain, which is essential for maintaining proper neurological function and development. Prealbumin is primarily located in the cytoplasm and vesicles of developing rat brain cells, where Prealbumin is believed to be transported from the cerebrospinal fluid via endocytosis, highlighting Prealbumin′s importance in cellular uptake and distribution of vital hormones. Notably, sequence variants of Prealbumin have been implicated in the formation of amyloid fibrils associated with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP), a hereditary systemic amyloidosis, indicating that alterations in Prealbumin′s structure can lead to significant pathological consequences. While the biologically active form of Prealbumin is a tetramer, the amyloidogenic intermediate exists as a monomer, underscoring Prealbumin′s structural integrity in preventing disease. Additionally, Prealbumin interacts with retinol-binding protein (RBP), further emphasizing Prealbumin′s role in the transport of essential nutrients. The gene encoding Prealbumin is located on human chromosome 18q12.1, making Prealbumin a critical component in the study of both normal physiology and disease states.
