HGD Antibody (C-5) is a mouse monoclonal IgG2a kappa light chain antibody that detects HGD protein of mouse, rat, and human origin by western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), immunohistochemistry with paraffin-embedded sections (IHCP), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). HGD (C-5) antibody is available in both non-conjugated and various conjugated forms, including agarose, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), phycoerythrin (PE), fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), and multiple Alexa Fluor® conjugates. HGD protein, or homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase, is a crucial enzyme consisting of 445 amino acids that plays a significant role in amino acid degradation. HGD (C-5) monoclonal antibody targets a protein predominantly expressed in kidney, colon, liver, prostate, and small intestine, where HGD utilizes iron as a cofactor to facilitate homogentisate conversion to 4-maleylacetoacetate, a vital step in the metabolic pathway leading to L-phenylalanine synthesis from fumarate and acetoacetic acid. Proper functioning of HGD is essential, as defects in the gene encoding HGD lead to alkaptonuria, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by darkening of urine upon standing, black pigmentation in cartilage and connective tissues, and arthritis of the spine.
