Ebi3 is a crucial component of the interleukin-12 family, functioning as a homolog to the IL-12 p40 subunit protein. Ebi3 forms heterodimers with either IL-12 p35 or its homolog p28, resulting in the production of the cytokine IL-27, which plays a significant role in the immune response by promoting the rapid clonal expansion of naive CD4+ T cells.
