This enzyme is primarily located in the endoplasmic reticulum and is essential for maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis, as β-glucosidase 2 prevents the accumulation of glycolipids, which can lead to cellular dysfunction and various diseases. β-glucosidase 2 exists as three alternatively spliced isoforms and is widely expressed, with highest levels found in the placenta, kidney, brain, skeletal muscle, and heart, while lower levels are present in the liver. The gene encoding β-glucosidase 2 is located on human chromosome 9, which contains over 900 genes and represents nearly 4% of the human genome, highlighting its importance in human health and disease.
