Triiodothyronine, commonly known as T3, is a thyroid hormone crucial for regulating various metabolic processes in the body. It is one of the two primary hormones produced by the thyroid gland, the other being thyroxine (T4). Although T3 is produced in smaller quantities than T4, it is significantly more active and plays a vital role in influencing the metabolic rate, heart function, digestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance.T3 is produced in two ways: directly by the thyroid gland and through the conversion of T4 into T3 in peripheral tissues. This conversion is essential because T4, although more abundant, is less active than T3. The enzyme responsible for this conversion is deiodinase.
The production and release of T3 are tightly regulated by the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis. The hypothalamus secretes thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH then acts on the thyroid gland, prompting the production and release of T4 and T3. The levels of these thyroid hormones, in turn, regulate the release of TRH and TSH through a negative feedback loop.T3 exerts its effects by entering cells and binding to thyroid hormone receptors in the nucleus, which modulates the transcription of specific genes, leading to metabolic effects. Its influence on metabolism includes increasing the basal metabolic rate, enhancing oxygen consumption and heat production, and influencing the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
