Polycystin-L, also known as PKD2L1 or TRPP3, is a member of the polycystin protein family and is encoded by the PKD2L1 gene in humans. This protein functions as a non-selective cation channel, contributing to the regulation of calcium ion levels in cells, an essential aspect of numerous cellular processes.Polycystin-L is part of the transient receptor potential (TRP) family of ion channels, specifically the subfamily known as TRPP or "polycystic". These channels are involved in various sensory and regulatory functions, including the sensation of pain, heat, cold, pressure, and taste.
Polycystin-L is known to form a complex with another protein, polycystin-2 (also known as PKD2 or TRPP2), which is known for its involvement in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), a common genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. While Polycystin-L itself is not directly associated with ADPKD, it is involved in several important biological functions. It's expressed in various tissues, including the kidney and taste cells of the tongue. In taste cells, Polycystin-L is thought to contribute to sour taste perception. In the kidney, its role is less clear but is believed to participate in normal renal functions and possibly in the development of renal cysts.
