MRP-S18B Activators

MRP-S18B, also known as Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein S18B, is a protein encoded by the MRPS18B gene in humans. This protein is a component of the small subunit (28S) of the mitochondrial ribosome, which is involved in the synthesis of proteins within the mitochondria, the organelles responsible for energy production in cells.Mitochondrial ribosomes, while functionally similar to their cytoplasmic counterparts, have unique structural and compositional characteristics. MRP-S18B, along with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins, plays a vital role in mitochondrial protein synthesis, facilitating the translation of mitochondrial DNA-encoded mRNA sequences into proteins. These proteins predominantly form part of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, which drives oxidative phosphorylation, the primary method of ATP generation in cells.

MRP-S18B is crucial for the stability and function of the mitochondrial ribosome. Its alteration or dysfunction can lead to compromised mitochondrial function and potentially contribute to a group of disorders known as mitochondrial diseases. These diseases often involve multi-systemic indicators, affecting tissues with high energy demands such as the brain, heart, and muscles.Additionally, changes in the expression of MRPS18B have been associated with certain types of cancer, suggesting a potential role in carcinogenesis. However, the precise link between MRPS18B and cancer progression requires further investigation.
