CLV3 Activators

CLV3, or CLAVATA3, is a critical signaling peptide in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, playing a pivotal role in regulating the development of the shoot apical meristem (SAM). SAM is a small region at the plant's growing tip, consisting of undifferentiated stem cells responsible for the formation of all the aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and flowers.

CLV3 functions as part of a signaling pathway that maintains the balance between stem cell proliferation and differentiation. It acts by binding to a receptor complex, which includes the CLAVATA1 (CLV1) receptor kinase. This interaction triggers a signaling cascade that ultimately limits the size of the stem cell pool in the SAM. By doing so, CLV3 ensures that the meristem produces the appropriate number of cells for plant organ development while retaining a sufficient number of undifferentiated stem cells.The precise regulation of CLV3 and its pathway is vital for the correct formation of plant structures. Disruption in the CLV3 signaling can lead to over-proliferation of stem cells, resulting in abnormal growth patterns, such as enlarged meristems and floral meristem identity defects.
