Sulfiredoxin, also known as Sulfiredoxin-1 or chromosome 20 open reading frame 139 (C20orf139), plays a crucial role as a cytoplasmic antioxidant protein, primarily involved in the reduction of oxidative modifications that can lead to cellular damage. Sulfiredoxin is essential for regulating peroxiredoxins (PRXs), a family of proteins that mitigate oxidative stress by reducing hydroperoxides. Sulfiredoxin specifically reduces the sulfinic acid form of conserved cysteine residues in PRDX1, PRDX2, PRDX3, and PRDX4 to their sulfenic acid forms, thereby enhancing their ability to participate in downstream signaling pathways that involve transcription factors and kinases.
