Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen, also known as cyclin, is a highly conserved nuclear protein that plays a critical role in DNA replication and repair. Functioning as a sliding clamp, Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen forms a homotrimeric ring around DNA, facilitating the processivity of DNA polymerases delta (δ) and epsilon (ε) during replication. This allows Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen to act as a scaffold for recruiting various proteins that are key players in DNA repair, chromatin remodeling, and the regulation of the cell cycle. Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen expression peaks during the S phase of the cell cycle, making it a useful marker for cell proliferation studies.
