IRBP Antibody (H-6) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 antibody that detects interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP) in mouse, rat, and human samples through applications such as western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IRBP plays a crucial role in the visual cycle by facilitating the transport of retinoids between photoreceptor cells and the retinal pigment epithelium, which is essential for maintaining photoreceptor health and function. IRBP is predominantly expressed in the photoreceptor cells of the retina and the pinealocytes of the pineal gland, where IRBP aids in the recycling of visual pigments and the regulation of light sensitivity. The gene encoding human IRBP is located on chromosome 10q11.2, and IRBP expression is tightly regulated by a putative trans-acting complex that binds to a cis-element in the IRBP promoter, ensuring proper transcriptional activation. Notably, hypomethylation of cysteine residues in the IRBP promoters of bovine and murine photoreceptor cells is critical for IRBP gene expression. Structurally, IRBP is a glycoprotein characterized by a unique four-fold repeat structure, with each repeat consisting of approximately 300 amino acids that include distinct A and B domains. The antigenic properties of IRBP, along with S-antigen and opsin, are implicated in the pathogenesis of posterior uveitis, a condition marked by inflammation of the choroid and subsequent photoreceptor cell death.
