Gemin8 is a crucial 242 amino acid protein encoded by the mouse gene Gemin8, and plays a significant role as a major component of the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex, which is essential for the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) vital for pre-mRNA splicing. The SMN complex, which includes Gemin8 along with Gemins 2-7 and unrip, acts as an assembly machine for snRNPs, and proper function is critical for maintaining neuronal health.
