αC-crystallin Antibody (H-5) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 kappa light chain antibody that detects αC-crystallin protein of mouse, rat, and human origin by western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-αC-crystallin antibody (H-5) is available in both non-conjugated and various conjugated forms, including agarose, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), phycoerythrin (PE), fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), and multiple Alexa Fluor® conjugates. αC-crystallin plays a crucial role in maintaining lens transparency and refractive index, which is vital for proper vision. Located primarily in the eye lens, crystallins, including αC-crystallin, are essential for structural integrity of the lens, preventing light scattering that can lead to cataract formation. Structurally, αC-crystallin belongs to the small heat shock protein family and consists of three gene products: αA, αB, and αC. These proteins feature a unique seven-domain structure, which includes four homologous motifs and a connecting peptide, allowing effective function as molecular chaperones. While αC-crystallin does not renature denatured proteins, this molecular chaperone stabilizes proteins in large soluble aggregates, thus preventing aggregation and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Research has shown that αC-crystallin interacts with membrane proteins, specifically at the polar-apolar interface, influencing lipid bilayer mobility and highlighting significance in cellular function and integrity.
