Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones that play crucial roles in the bacterial response to environmental stress. HSPs assist in protein folding, stability, and the regulation of protein interactions within the bacterial cell, promoting survival and adaptation to hostile environments such as the human stomach. H. pylori HSPs, particularly HspB and Hsp60, are believed to contribute significantly to the bacterium's virulence, enabling it to colonize the gastric mucosa, evade the host immune response, and persist in the stomach lining.
The expression of HSPs is upregulated in response to various stress conditions, such as changes in temperature, pH, and exposure to reactive oxygen species, which are common challenges faced by H. pylori in the gastric environment. Besides their intracellular functions, HSPs of H. pylori might also interact with the host immune system, influencing the inflammatory response and contributing to the pathogenesis of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
