APO Activators

Aminopeptidase O (AP-O), a putative protein, is part of the M1 family of zinc aminopeptidases. It was identified through a computational search for novel aminopeptidases, based on the sequences of members of the M1 family of exopeptidases. This search revealed a coding sequence for AP-O on chromosome 9q22, indicating the presence of an uncharacterized metalloprotease.AP-O is encoded by the AOPEP gene and is a zinc-dependent metallopeptidase. As a member of the M1 zinc aminopeptidase family, its primary function is to catalyze the removal of an amino acid from the amino terminus of a protein or peptide. This enzymatic action is essential for various biological processes, including protein metabolism and peptide hormone metabolism . The protein may also play a significant role in the generation of angiotensin IV, a peptide implicated in the regulation of blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Angiotensin IV is part of the renin-angiotensin system, a critical regulator of cardiovascular and renal function. The involvement of AP-O in this pathway suggests its potential significance in these physiological processes .Furthermore, diseases associated with the AOPEP gene, which encodes AP-O, include Dystonia 31 and Fanconi Anemia, Complementation Group C. These associations highlight the potential involvement of AP-O in diverse biological functions and disease mechanisms. The protein's involvement in peptide hormone metabolism and its association with these diseases suggest a broader role in cellular and physiological processes beyond its enzymatic activity.
