Benzethonium hydroxide solution is an aqueous solution of a quaternary ammonium compound that exhibits strong surfactant and antimicrobial properties. Its mode of action involves the disruption of microbial cell membranes. As a surfactant, it can interact with the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, compromising its integrity. This disruption leads to increased membrane permeability, causing the leakage of intracellular components, ultimately resulting in cell death.
