胆固醇是肺上皮衬里液表面活性物质中最丰富的中性脂质，胆固醇碳原子 5 和 6 之间的双键容易受到臭氧的侵蚀。5α-羟基-6-酮胆固醇（6-oxo-3,5,-diol）是肺上皮细胞暴露于臭氧时形成的胆固醇的主要代谢产物，其主要前体是 5β,6β-环氧胆固醇。2 6-氧代-3,5-二醇是人类支气管上皮细胞胆固醇合成的强效抑制剂，IC50 为 350 nM，在低 µM 范围内具有显著的细胞毒性。
