Ncd, short for Non-claret disjunctional, is a motor protein specific to the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. It belongs to the kinesin superfamily, a group of proteins known for their role in transporting cellular cargo along microtubules. Ncd is distinctive for being a minus-end-directed motor, meaning it moves towards the minus end of microtubules, opposite to the direction of most kinesins.Ncd plays a crucial role in meiosis and mitosis, particularly in the formation and function of the spindle apparatus, which is essential for proper chromosome segregation during cell division.
