Ursolic Acid, a naturally occurring triterpenoid, has been noted to demonstrate anti-angiogenic and anti-proliferative properties. Mechanistic studies suggest that this compound down-regulates MMP-2 and uPA expression in cells via inhibition of Akt, JNK, mammalian target of Rapamycin (sc-3504) phosphorylation, and levels of NFkappaB protein in the nucleus. Other experiments have shown that Ursolic Acid may improve blood glucose, glucose tolerance, insulin tolerance, glycosylated hemoglobin, and plasma leptin levels in diabetic murine models. Additionally, this agent displays a capacity to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis through activation of p53 pathway and Bax protein, as well as down-regulation of Bcl-2.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yeh et alYeh et al. (PubMed ID 20352621) found that Ursolic Acid had dose- and time-dependent inhibitory effects on highly metastatic breast cancer cells at non-toxic concentrations by reducing MMP-2 and u-PA expression. -SCBT Publication Review
