Thymidine is a pyrimidine deoxynucleoside which pairs with deoxyadenosine in double-stranded DNA. Thymidine is a nucleoside composed of a pentose sugar, deoxyribose, and a pyrimidine base thymine. Phosphorylation of thymidine with one, two or three phosphoric acid groups, can form dTMP (deoxythymidine monophosphate), dTDP, or dTTP. Thymidine has been used in cell synchronization in G1/early S phase, to incubate cells in cell-cycle analysis, and as a supplement in HL5-modified medium for cell culture.
