Sodium octyl sulfate (SOS) is an anionic surfactant used in a wide variety of industries and applications. It is a useful chemical to study the selective enrichment of albumin in biological samples. It is also used as a wetting agent, dispersant, or emulsifier in the production of paints, coatings, and inks. Sodium octyl sulfate can aid in the dispersion of pigments and improve the flow and leveling properties of the final product. It may act to inhibit the activity of enzymes, disrupt the structure of proteins, and alter the activity of membrane proteins. Sodium octyl sulfate can also increase the permeability of cell membranes and interfere with the function of cell receptors.
