Retrorsine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid, is a mutagenic, antimitotic, and cytotoxic compound. The toxicity of retrorsine relies on its bioactivation by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP) and may act to result from one of two compounds that are generated after CYP metabolism of retrorsine. Retrorsine works by inhibiting DNA synthesis and repair, which leads to mutations and damage in cells.
