Muscimol is a naturally occurring alkaloid that can be found in Amanita mushrooms. It is functional as a potent and selective agonist of the GABAA receptor. The structure of Muscimol places the binding functionalities (amine, hydroxyl) in a spatial arrangement almost identical to that of GABA, allowing recognition of Muscimol at the highly specific GABAA binding site. Muscimol has been widely employed for this agonist activity in studies probing the consequent effects of GABAA stimulation.
