QUICK LINKS

Mesosulfuron-methyl is a potent herbicide that inhibits the activity of key enzymes in plants, specifically phosphatase and esterases. It has shown to be effective against perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) at optimum concentrations in vitro. By binding to the phosphatase enzyme, mesosulfuron-methyl effectively blocks its activity, resulting in the prevention of production of essential metabolites of acetyl CoA required for protein synthesis. This inhibition leads to a decrease in dry weight while simultaneously increasing protein content. A liquid chromatography method is available for the identification and quantification of mesosulfuron-methyl in plant material.
