QUICK LINKS

Mefenamic acid functions as an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis. It exerts its mechanism of action by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, specifically the COX-1 and COX-2 isoenzymes. By doing so, it interferes with the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin precursors, ultimately reducing the production of prostaglandins. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the inflammatory response. At the molecular level, mefenamic acid interacts with specific enzymes and substrates involved in the inflammatory response.
