Matrine is an alkaloid found in plants of the Sophora familiy. It has various effects including antineoplastic, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor activities. It depresses both glutamate-induced responses and neurally evoked excitatory junctional potentials. Additionally, it induces apoptosis by collapsing mitochondrial membrane potential. This compound is also a selective KOR (kappa-opioid receptor) agonist. It inhibits LPS-induced splenocyte proliferation and release of IL-1 and IL-6 from mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro. Matrine reduces production of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAG) and serum antigen (HBeAG) with IC50 values of 0.75 and 3.35 mg/mL, respectively, in vitro. Also in vitro, Matrine inhibits angiotension II-induced hyperplastic growth of cardiac fibroblasts in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, Matrine inhibits proliferation of melanoma, breast, and colon cancer cells with IC50s ranging from 0.769-2.758 mg/ml.
