Indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPA) is an alpha-Keto analogue of tryptophan, an essential amino acid. It is used as a substrate in a variety of biochemical experiments, including studies of enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways, and the regulation of gene expression. Indole-3-pyruvic acid is a substrate for tryptophan synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of Indole-3-pyruvic acid to tryptophan. Indole-3-pyruvic acid may act to stimulate the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation, and to increase the production of nitric oxide, a compound involved in the regulation of blood pressure. It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as well as the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
