D-(+)-Biotin is a coenzyme that offers three possible binding sites. It is involved in the regulation of gene transcription through the modification of histones. Additionally, it has applications in biotechnology such as in DNA-hybridization, flow cytometry, affinity purification, and identification of protein-protein interactions and post-translational modifications. Biotin is also used as a growth factor in mammalian cell culture and is essential for cell growth, fatty acid production, and metabolism of fats and amino acids. It is involved in the citric acid cycle and is responsible for transferring carbon dioxide. Furthermore, biotin plays important roles in immunological purification through its avidin/streptavidin-biotin binding mechanisms.
