α-amyrin is a triterpenoid found in the bark of various trees like oaks and birches. This compound has been the subject of many laboratory studies and plays a role in the exploration of new drug development. It is utilized in research to investigate cellular signaling, gene expression, and apoptosis, as well as the impacts of oxidative stress, inflammation, and cancer. While the exact mechanism through which α-amyrin operates is not completely deciphered, it is thought to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme linked to the production of leukotrienes, which are associated with various conditions. In addition, α-amyrin is also suggested to function as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and thus shielding cells from oxidative action.
