7-Dehydrocholesterol is involved in the synthesis of vitamin D3.It is converted to pre-vitamin D3, which then undergoes a thermal isomerization to form vitamin D3. This process occurs in the epidermis for maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D.7-Dehydrocholesterol plays a role in the skin′s response to sunlight, as it is the precursor to vitamin D3, which is important for calcium absorption.Its mechanism of action involves the photochemical conversion to pre-vitamin D3, followed by a thermal isomerization to form the active vitamin D3. This molecular process is a key step in the ability to produce vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure.
