4-Amino-1,8-naphthalimide is a small molecule inhibitor of PARP-1 (poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1), an enzyme responsible for mediating covalent attachment of residues to proteins. Inhibition of this enzyme can sensitize cells to the cytotoxicity of chemical agents, and can also decrease cell death related to reperfusion and ischemia-related oxygen free radicals by attenuating the rapid depletion of cellular NAD and ATP resulting from excessive activation of PARP.
