1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine is a non-pyrogenic phospholipid that may act to form well-defined liposomes that are capable of being loaded with a molecule of choice. This loading and vessicle formation is reportedly accomplished simply by a single hydration step. Research has shown that this encapsulation technique may act to increase the uptake for 125I-labelled polyvinylpyrrolidone by four times in an intestinal sac preparation from adult rats. More recently, compounds such as 5-fluorouracil (sc-207031), cyclosporin A (sc-3503) and celecoxib (sc-217869) have been used in this lipid encapsulation technique.
