Zinc sulfate heptahydrate is used in protein precipitation, various manufacturing processes, and has been used to induce metallothienin expression in mice. Additionally, it has been reported to remove hemoglobin from mammalian tissue cytosol for subsequent study of lipoxygenase activity from biological samples.
