Zimelidine dihydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that functions by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin at the presynaptic membrane of serotonergic neurons. This inhibition leads to an increase in the extracellular concentration of serotonin in the brain, which can modulate neurotransmission and affect various physiological processes. At the molecular level, zimelidine dihydrochloride binds to the serotonin transporter protein, preventing the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic neuron. This mechanism of action results in an accumulation of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, prolonging its action and enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission.
