(+)-Usnic acid is the enantiomerically pure form of usnic acid, known for displaying enhanced biological functionalities compared to its racemic mixture. It is a yellow crystalline solid, showing sparse solubility in water but dissolving with ease in organic mediums like ethanol and chloroform. It inhibits mitochondrial respiration, specifically by binding to complex I of the electron transport chain, thus stopping proton pumping, resulting in a lowered mitochondrial membrane potential and potentially causing apoptosis. (+)-Usnic acid has been used to study the mechanism of its antimicrobial activity in bacterial cells and its ability as an antibiofilm agent, especially against Group A Streptococci.
