Urobilinogen is a yellow-brown colored compound that is produced in the intestines as a product of the breakdown of bilirubin, a pigment derived from the breakdown of red blood cells. Urobilinogen is involved in the regulation of many processes, like bile acid synthesis, hepatic glucose metabolism, cholesterol metabolism, the production of inflammatory mediators, and the production of certain hormones, such as insulin and glucagon. This compound has been studied extensively in the laboratory. It has been used as an indicator of liver function, as it is produced in the intestines and is then absorbed into the bloodstream and excreted in the urine. In addition, it has been used to study the metabolism of bilirubin and to identify the presence of certain enzymes, such as bilirubin oxidase and biliverdin reductase.
