Urobilin hydrochloride is a tetrapyrrole bile pigment formed by the degradation of heme. It is produced via the oxidation of urobilinogen, a degradation product of bilirubin. Urobilin hydrochloride is excreted in urine and causes the yellow color, making it a key marker in urinalysis. It can also be used as a marker of human waste contamination in recreational and source waters to assess water quality.
