Ubiquitin is a small, highly conserved protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It functions as a signal for targeting proteins for degradation by the proteasome, a large protein complex that degrades unneeded or damaged proteins in the cell. Ubiquitin is covalently attached to target proteins in a multi-step process that involves several enzymes, and this modification marks the protein for destruction by the proteasome. In addition to its role in protein degradation, ubiquitin has also been implicated in other cellular processes, such as DNA repair, signal transduction, and protein trafficking.
