U 18666A is a cell-permeable, amphiphilic amino-steroid that alters intracellular membrane protein trafficking by impairing intracellular biosynthesis and transport of LDL-derived cholesterol, presumably via its inhibitory effect on 2,3-oxidosqualene-lanosterol cyclase activity. It is also a weak inhibitor of hedgehog (Hh) signaling. U 18666A is a compound derived from the androgenic hormone testosterone, and its application in laboratory research has been to explore the impacts of androgens on the body.
