Trimebutine maleate acts by binding to and activating peripheral mu-opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, which leads to the inhibition of acetylcholine release from the enteric neurons. This results in a decrease in smooth muscle contractions and an increase in muscle tone. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of calcium influx into smooth muscle cells, leading to relaxation of the muscle.
