trans-4,5-Dihydroxy-1,2-dithiane is an oxidized form of dithiothreitol (DTT). It is a hygroscopic solid, colorless in appearance, with the molecular formula C4H8O2S2 and a molecular weight of 152.27 g/mol. This compound exists in two enantiomers, namely (4S,5S)-1,2-dithiane-4,5-diol and (4R,5R)-1,2-dithiane-4,5-diol. Commercially, it is produced through various methods such as the oxidation of thioacetals, the reaction of ethylene glycol with thiophosgene, and the reaction of ethylene sulfide with formaldehyde.
