Topiramate is a sulfamate-substituted monosaccharide that is a derivative of the sugar monosaccharide D-fructose. In biochemistry, topiramate is known to act on voltage-gated sodium channels, enhance the activity of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and inhibit the activity of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. These actions contribute to its biological effects. Topiramate modulates the activity of certain ion channels and receptors, including AMPA/kainate receptors and carbonic anhydrase enzymes.
