Tolfenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory compound that functions as an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. It targets the COX-1 and COX-2 isoforms, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. This inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis leads to a decrease in inflammation, pain, and fever. Tolfenamic acid achieves this by reversibly binding to the active site of the COX enzymes, preventing the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2. As a result, it modulates the inflammatory response and provides a means to study the role of prostaglandins in various experimental models. Tolfenamic acid may exhibit antiproliferative effects in certain cancer cell lines, suggesting a potential role in cancer studies. Its ability to inhibit COX enzymes makes it useful for investigating the molecular pathways involved in inflammation and cancer progression.
